Position Description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to join a dynamic inpatient behavioral health unit located within a well-established medical center in New York. This unit provides critical mental health and substance abuse services to adult patients aged 16 and older. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the RN will apply the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care in a structured psychiatric setting.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments addressing physical, social, emotional, and psychological status.
  • Identify risk factors such as withdrawal symptoms, suicide risk, fall risk, and nutritional needs.
  • Document findings thoroughly and communicate with the broader care team.

Diagnosis & Planning

  • Formulate nursing diagnoses and establish measurable, patient-centered goals.
  • Design individualized care plans reflecting both short- and long-term patient needs.
  • Incorporate patient education and discharge planning from day one.

Intervention/Implementation

  • Implement care strategies for patients with psychiatric diagnoses, substance use disorders, and dual diagnoses.
  • Manage psychiatric emergencies and agitation using approved de-escalation techniques.
  • Administer medications accurately and monitor for side effects and response.
  • Lead individual and group therapeutic sessions focused on patient wellness and coping strategies.
  • Collaborate with providers and other care team members during treatment and interdisciplinary rounds.
  • Supervise and support ancillary staff as needed.

Evaluation

  • Monitor and document patient progress toward goals.
  • Adjust care plans in collaboration with the team based on evolving patient conditions.
  • Provide feedback and support to patients and families throughout the care continuum.

Qualifications

  • Active New York State RN License.
  • BCLS Certification (Basic Life Support).
  • Minimum 1 year of recent medical/surgical or psychiatric nursing experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Office of Mental Health (OMH) documentation and reporting practices.
  • Experience with electronic systems such as PMCS highly desirable.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced, secure inpatient psychiatric unit.
  • Multidisciplinary team including psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other RNs.
  • Focus on crisis stabilization, therapeutic engagement, and patient education.
  • Emphasis on safety, communication, and continuity of care.
